COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), launched “Azaadi Plantation Drive”, on August 14, 2018; with slogan “Adopt a Tree”. A total of 5000 trees of different species will be planted in this drive by the Islamabad Campus on sites specified by Capital Development Authority, Islamabad. During this “Adopt a Tree” campaign, CUI will not only plant the trees it will also take care of the plants for a year.
The efforts are led by the university rector, Prof. Dr. Raheel Qamar, who in his inaugural remarks said that each individual must do their part to ensure a healthy and clean environment for the future. Dr. Qamar affirmed the commitment to enhance the plantation efforts every year and to raise awareness among university students for their need to actively participate in making Pakistan green. Dr. Qamar said that we have set a precedent of raising our own resources from donations, made through public awareness for the plantation campaign, he also said that it is the civic duty of every citizen to play a part in maintaining the beauty of our homeland which has been bestowed with natural treasures in the form of four weather seasons and a geography supportive for plants.
On the inaugural day of the campaign 2,000 trees were planted. 1,500 Jacaranda trees were planted on the green belt along Islamabad Express way, from Koralchowk to Gulberg green, similarly, 500 trees (Shukh Chain) were planted on the Green belt along Murree Road, from RawalChowk to Faizabad interchange Islamabad. Remaining 3,000 plants of Batangi, Kachnar and Shukh Chain will be planted in the coming weeks along Murree Road and Kuri Road. The Azadi Plantation Drive was purely conceived as a voluntarily initiative and the faculty, students and community donated generously for purchasing the plants. It was a great team work, resulted in training of our students to give something back to our beloved mother land.

Faculty members, students and general public joined the activity.
